Terms of Service

Effective September 8, 2026 · Last updated October 1, 2026

Roostmate, Co. ("Roost") helps people find roommates. These terms explain what you can expect from us and what we expect from you. By creating an account or using Roost, you agree to them.

Who can use Roost

You must be 18 or older. Roost is currently available only in the United States. We may limit, pause, or reopen account registration as the service grows.

Your account

Keep access to your verified phone or legacy password secure and use your real information. One account per person. We can suspend or remove accounts that break these terms, abuse other members, or put the service at risk. If we do, we'll tell you why unless doing so would compromise a safety investigation.

Samples and compatibility

Profiles explicitly labeled "Sample" demonstrate how matching works; they are not active members and cannot receive handshakes. Compatibility percentages are informational estimates, not housing eligibility or safety determinations.

Shared household searches

Household invitations let joined members share a shortlist and votes. The household owner controls the final handshake, including whether to proceed when votes differ. Invitations should be shared only with people you know and expire automatically.

Your content

Your photos, profile text, and messages are yours. By posting them, you give us a limited license to store, display, and transmit that content, solely so the service works (for example, showing your profile to potential roommates and delivering your messages). We don't sell your content or use it for advertising. The license ends when you delete the content or your account, except for limited retained copies needed for safety, legal obligations or backup processing as explained in our Privacy Policy.

Fees

Roost currently has no paid features and does not process rent or deposits. Do not solicit money through Roost. If someone does, report them.

Roommate and housing decisions

Roost helps members meet; it is not a landlord, broker, property manager, screening service, or party to any lease or roommate agreement. We do not guarantee a member's identity, statements, housing, compatibility, or conduct. You are responsible for checking information, viewing a home, deciding whether to live with someone, and obtaining appropriate written agreements. Never send money based only on information in Roost.

What's not allowed

  • Harassment, threats, bullying, hate speech, slurs, or abuse.
  • Sexually explicit or pornographic content, sexual solicitation, or exploitation.
  • Fake profiles, impersonation, or misrepresenting who you are.
  • Scams of any kind, including asking anyone for deposits, rent, or other money.
  • Using Roost for anything other than finding a roommate, including commercial listings or promotion.
  • Scraping, probing, or trying to break the service.

Roost may automatically screen member-written text and refuse content before it is posted. No automated safeguard catches everything, so use Report or Block whenever something feels unsafe or violates these rules. Breaking these rules can mean losing your account immediately.

Service availability and liability

Roost is provided as-is and as-available, without warranties of any kind, express or implied. We don't guarantee that it will be available, error-free, or that any match will work out. To the fullest extent the law allows, Roost and its team aren't liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising from your use of the service. Use your own judgment when meeting people, and read our safety guide.

Additional service rules

The Community standards and Text messaging terms form part of these terms. Our Privacy Policy explains personal information handling. You may end use and delete your account in Settings; see deletion instructions. Do not publish unlawful discriminatory housing advertisements or infringe others' rights.

Maps and the iOS application

Use of interactive Google Maps is subject to the Google Maps Additional Terms, including the Google terms incorporated there. For App Store downloads, Apple's standard Licensed Application End User License Agreement applies to the app license unless a separate license is provided through the App Store. Roost supplies the roommate service; Apple does not supply roommate matching or support for Roost.

Disputes

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Illinois, without regard to its conflict of laws rules. Any dispute will be handled in the state or federal courts located in Illinois, except where mandatory law provides otherwise. Nothing in these terms limits rights or remedies that cannot lawfully be waived.

Changes and contact

If we change these terms in a way that matters, we'll let you know before the change takes effect. Contact Roostmate, Co. at info@roostmate.app.
