Roommate safety

Meeting a stranger to live together is a big deal. Here's how to do it safely.

How to report someone

Open a member's profile and tap Report, or open a chat, tap the ⋯ menu, and choose Report. Tell us what happened in your own words. A human reviews every report. Depending on what we find, we'll warn, suspend, or remove the account, and we may follow up with you if we need more detail. The person you report is never told who reported them.

How to block someone

Blocking works in both directions: they can't see you, and they can't contact you again. You won't appear in their browse results and they won't appear in yours. You don't need a reason, and they aren't notified.

Content safeguards

Roost screens member-written profile text, handshake notes, and messages for high-confidence threats, hateful language, sexually explicit solicitation, and common payment scams before that text is posted. Automated safeguards cannot catch everything, so Report or Block any member or content that feels unsafe or violates our rules.

What Roost will never do

  • Roost never asks you for money.
  • Roost never asks you for a deposit.
  • Roost never asks for your ID by email or chat.

If a message claims to be from Roost and asks for any of these, it's a scam. Report it.

The deposit scam

This is the number one roommate scam: someone you've never met asks you to send a deposit, first month's rent, or a "holding fee" to lock in a room. Never send a deposit or share financial information before you've met the person face to face and seen the place with your own eyes. No legitimate roommate needs money from you before that. Pressure to pay quickly is itself the red flag.

Meeting for the first time

  • Meet in a public place first, like a coffee shop, not at the apartment.
  • Tell a friend where you're going and when you expect to be back.
  • Do a video call before you tour anything. It confirms they're real and saves everyone time.
  • View the actual unit you'd be living in, not photos, not a "similar" one.
  • Trust your gut. If something feels off, it probably is, and you don't owe anyone an explanation for walking away.
